Scenic construction

We produce twelve in-house shows per year, each with its own specially designed and constructed scenery. Our scenic design, construction and painting teams play a vital role in the creative process of each production.

Volunteers working in our scenic department are supported by the Theatre's Carpenter and Freelance Designers. Training is given for all scenic construction and painting roles, although an artistic background is helpful.

Work in our scenic department takes place mainly during the daytime and occasionally at weekends. Set painting takes place for approximately two-weeks of each month, longer for Christmas production.

Each production is designed by an experienced Freelance Designer who works closely with the Director and Theatre Carpenter, and who has the overall vision of the set.

Typical tasks include -

  • Painting, papering
  • 'Distressing' techniques
  • 'Ageing' techniques
  • Paint-effects
  • Working with materials such as styrofoam, clay and plaster.
  • Prop-making and sourcing
  • Furniture making and sourcing
  • Upholstering

Safety First

Volunteers are required to wear protective clothing when undertaking tasks such as lifting or helping to install scenery. Safety footwear, helmets and glasses are provided where necessary.

Volunteers will not be required to work at heights, with dangerous materials, lift heavy equipment or use power tools.

Copies of our Public Liability Insurance can be requested from our box office and we undertake risk assessments for each production.

Volunteers should be 18 years and over.

Please note that the Theatre's main stage and backstage areas are not accessible to wheelchairs. Backstage areas have low-lighting and are approached by a series of steps.

The 'scenery dock' is at ground level, has good lighting, but has limited space.

Our studio theatre is fully accessible to wheelchairs.

If you would like to work in our scenic department and have any special requirements, please feel free to contact us to discuss them.

If you feel you would like to become part of our friendly, reliable scenic construction and painting team, we would love to hear from you.
